Everything we get asked
Removals FAQs
Straight answers about how we price, what is insured, what happens when the keys are late, and the rest of it.
Booking and timing
How much notice do you need?
One to two weeks for a small move, three to four for a whole house. Fridays and the last working day of the month go first, because that is when completions land. If you are moving this week, ring rather than email — we keep room for short notice.
Do you work weekends and bank holidays?
Yes. We are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and that is all. Weekend and end-of-month slots fill fast and can price higher.
What time will the van turn up?
Morning moves start around 8am. Afternoon bookings usually start between 12 and 1. You will have a confirmed time before the day, not a four-hour window.
Can you move me outside normal hours?
Often, yes — subject to availability and at an adjusted rate. Offices usually move in the evening or over a weekend for exactly this reason.
Price and quoting
How much does a removal cost in South West London?
Three things set it: how much there is, how far it is going, and how hard it is to get in and out at both ends. A one-bed flat moving within Tooting is a very different job to a four-bed house heading to Surrey with a fourth-floor walk-up at the other end. Tell us those three, with photos or a short video of the rooms, and you will have a fixed price in writing.
Do you charge by the hour?
Almost never. You get a fixed written price before we start. Hourly only makes sense on the rare job where nobody can say what is coming — a clearance, or a load still being sorted — and we will tell you if yours is one of them.
Why do you want photos or a video?
Because they show us the volume, the access and anything unusual. That is what makes a quote accurate rather than a number we have to revise on the morning. For a whole house we would rather do a survey, in person or over video.
Do I pay a deposit?
A 20% deposit secures the booking. The balance is paid on moving day, before we unload.
How do I pay?
Card or bank transfer.
Is there anything that can change the price on the day?
Three things, and we will always say so at the quote stage rather than spring them on you: a carry of more than 15 metres between the door and the vehicle, work running past 6pm where that was not agreed in advance, and waiting at a key exchange beyond the free 30 minutes.
Should I tip the crew?
Never expected. Always appreciated.
Insurance and what if
Are you insured?
Yes — £50,000 goods in transit and £5 million public liability. Ask and we will email you the certificate before you book. If a mover will not do that, do not book them.
Can I get more than £50,000 of cover?
Yes. £50,000 is the standard cover per vehicle, and it can be increased — ask for extended liability and we will arrange it before the move. It has to be agreed in writing beforehand, not settled afterwards.
What if I am moving something valuable?
Any single item worth more than £500 has to be declared before the day, or it is not covered. A piano, a serious piece of art, a watch collection — tell us and we will put extended liability in place rather than find out afterwards.
What happens if something gets damaged?
It is rare, and there is a process. Tell the crew there and then, and report it to the office within 24 hours of the job finishing — after that our insurer will not accept it. Written claims within 7 days. A £350 excess applies to any claim.
What if the keys are late?
It happens more often than anyone admits. You get 30 minutes free at a key exchange; after that it is £60 per van. If your chain looks tight, talk to your solicitor early.
What if the move cannot finish that day?
Your things stay secure with us, or go into storage, until we can deliver.
On the day
Do I need to sort out parking?
Yes, at both ends, and it matters more than people expect. Legal, usable space next to the door is the single biggest cause of a move running late. We will tell you how much room the van needs and whether a bay suspension from the council is worth it.
Do I have to be there?
You, or somebody who can make decisions for you. Somebody has to say which room the wardrobe goes in.
Will my sofa fit through the door?
If it will not, we take it apart, find another route, or bring lifting equipment where access allows. It is rarely the first time we have seen it. And if a piece genuinely will not fit the new place, we can put it into storage while you decide.
Do you dismantle and rebuild furniture?
Beds, wardrobes, tables — yes. Tell us in advance so the time and the people are booked for it.
Can I ride in the van?
No. For insurance reasons we cannot carry passengers or pets.
Is the van properly kitted out?
Blankets, straps and protective coverings are in every van as standard, not an extra.
Packing
When do you pack?
For a full packing service, usually the day before. On smaller moves we can pack the same morning.
Can I pack myself?
Of course — but anything you pack yourself is not covered by our insurance, so use strong boxes, plenty of paper and fill every gap. Label every box with the room it is going to, not what is in it. The crew reads the room name.
Do I need to disconnect the washing machine?
Yes, and the dishwasher, and they need draining too. We cannot do it for you — connecting and disconnecting appliances, plumbing and electrics needs a qualified trade, so book one in before moving day. Fridges and freezers need defrosting, and should not be switched back on for 24 hours after delivery.
What should I keep with me?
Documents, jewellery, medication and anything irreplaceable. Not because the van is unsafe — because you will want them in your hand, not in a box.
Storage
What kind of storage is it?
Secure, purpose-built units suited to household or business goods, monitored and alarmed. We arrange the unit, move your things in, and bring them back out when you are ready.
How much fits in a unit?
A typical unit takes the contents of a small room — furniture and boxes both. We will look at what you have and tell you what you need rather than sell you space you will not use.
How is it billed?
Monthly, in advance.
Can I get to my things?
Yes, with notice, so your items can be brought forward ready for you. We can help you get at them if you want a hand.
Is anything not allowed?
Nothing hazardous, nothing perishable, nothing illegal.
Will I know what is in there?
We can build an inventory of everything that goes in, which is worth having if it is going to be in there a while.
The paperwork
Do you need a list of what is being moved?
For insurance we need an itemised inventory before the move. For a standard house or flat that is a room-by-room list rather than every teaspoon — we will tell you what we need when we quote.
Do you use sub-contractors?
We reserve the right to sub-contract work, and our terms apply in full to anybody who does. In practice most jobs are our own crew and our own vans.
Do you take your shoes off in the house?
No — for safety the crew keep their boots on while they are carrying. Put floor protection down, or ask us to bring carpet protection and we will.
Do the crew get a break?
Yes. The crew are entitled to a 20-minute break in any four-hour period. It is built into the timings we quote, not added on top.
Is there anything you will not load?
No flammable liquids, and in a packing service no opened food or liquids. Nothing hazardous, perishable or illegal goes into storage either.
Other things we do
Can you take away things I do not want?
Yes, where somebody can still use it. Furniture in good condition gets passed on to someone who needs it rather than going in a skip. There is a charge for taking it away, and it goes on the total balance to pay.
Do you do office moves?
Yes — desks, screens, server racks and the filing nobody wants to touch. Usually in the evening or over a weekend so nobody loses a working day.
Do you go outside London?
Yes. Local work across South West London is most of what we do, but we run long-distance moves across England and Wales from the same office.
